Pope Francis

In a Wednesday audience in September, Pope Francis reflected on the missionary zeal of Saint Daniel Comboni, emphasizing his passionate dedication to evangelization, especially in Africa. The pope shared insights from Comboni’s life and teachings:

Heroic Witness:

  • St. Daniel Comboni’s deep love for Africa was evident in his writings, where he expressed, “they have taken possession of my heart that lives for them alone” and, “I shall die with Africa on my lips.”
  • Despite witnessing the horrors of slavery, Comboni recognized that Jesus elevated the dignity of every human being, exposing the falsity of slavery. He believed that social slavery stemmed from a deeper slavery of the heart, the slavery of sin, from which the Lord frees us.
  • Slavery and economic colonialism are still with us, particularly in Africa. The world must stop exploiting the
    continent.

Evangelization and Inculturation

  • Comboni’s missionary insight was encapsulated in the phrase “Save Africa with Africa,” promoting a noncolonial approach to evangelization. He envisioned the people as “subjects” rather than mere “objects” of mission.
  • Comboni integrated local clergy and promoted the role of catechists, emphasizing their importance in bringing forth evangelization. He believed in human development through the cultivation of arts and professions,
family roles, and women’s involvement in transforming culture and society.
  • It is essential to evangelize within the context of the local culture, rejecting external models and sterile welfarism. We must evangelize the culture and inculturate the Gospel together.

Emphasis on Communal Evangelization and Solidarity

  • Comboni’s missionary passion was rooted in charity, particularly the zeal that made the sufferings of others his own. His drive came from the joy of the Gospel, drawn from Christ’s love, leading to love for Christ.
  • St. Daniel’s style of evangelization emphasized communion within the Church. He wanted missionaries who were holy, free from sin, humble, and filled with charity.
  • Our Church must make common cause with those crucified by history; we must live in solidarity with the marginalized and oppressed.
  • Let us remember the poor and work for justice. Do not forget those crucified by injustice and domination.

The poor will be the ones who will open the door of Heaven for you.
