The Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year, themed “Pilgrims of Hope,” began on  December 24, 2024, with Pope Francis opening the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica. This yearlong celebration of conversion and grace concludes on January 6, 2026, inviting Catholics worldwide to embrace spiritual renewal.

While millions may travel to Rome to experience the Jubilee, Bishop Christian Carlassare, mccj, of South Sudan emphasizes that true pilgrimage is not limited to physical travel. “We can be pilgrims of hope wherever we are,” he says, sharing four key ways to fully engage in the Jubilee from anywhere.

1. Embrace Pilgrimage through Prayer
Pilgrimage is fundamentally a spiritual journey. Bishop Carlassare stresses the importance of prayer, especially contemplation, as a way to encounter God. Pilgrims can deepen their connection with the Lord by reflecting on life’s events and listening to His call, even from home.

2. Live in Hope and Vocation
Hope, a central virtue of the Jubilee, calls for faith and love. Bishop Carlassare urges Catholics to live their vocations fully and protect life’s dignity at all stages. By answering God’s call and expressing their unique gifts, believers contribute meaningfully to the world, combating societal dehumanization. Quoting St. Catherine of Siena, he says, “If you are fully who you are, you would set the world in flames.”

3. Seek Conversion and Reconciliation
The Holy Door, a symbol of renewal, signifies passage to a life of faith and Christian community. Catholics are encouraged to approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a time for personal and communal healing. Reconciliation with God, oneself, and others offers new hope and transformative mercy.

4. Build Strong Communities
Pilgrimage is inherently communal. Bishop Carlassare highlights the importance of rediscovering the beauty of shared faith journeys. He encourages Catholics to commit to community initiatives, improving education, social cohesion, and the environment. By fostering communal growth, believers can inspire hope and create a balanced society.

The 2025 Jubilee is an invitation for all Catholics to embrace hope, prayer, and community, living as pilgrims of faith and grace wherever they are.
